What to do in an Accident?

Accidents are frightening and very confusing to deal with. Although some of us can handle small dents or scratches on a car, try to follow these steps so that in a serious accident, you are at your best.

1. Calm Down: What makes a difference in any situation is how careful you manage yourself. Take a few seconds to relax and quickly address the important issues: Are you hurt? Turn off the car's engine and put on the brake. Do you smell any gas or burning?

2. Don't Move the Car: Unless your state allows you to move your car after an accident, the best way is to simply stay put. Put on the hazard lights and try to set up cones, orange lights, or triangles to direct other drivers away from the accident. The only time you should pull off to the side is for a flat tire, safety risk, or in case you experience car trouble.

3. If you feel injured, remain in the car and try to either call 911 or get someone else to make the call. Do some steady breathing exercises and just wait for an ambulance. Even if you're not sure whether you are injured or not, make sure to get help even if something only slightly hurts. Injuries should never be taken lightly.

4. If you are 100% sure you are uninjured, try to get an emergency kit and see about helping others. Do not move anyone who is injured. Call the police to file an accident report. Only state what happened and not who was to blame. Do not admit guilt in any circumstance. Also, Ask for the police officer's name, or information for your own records.

5. If at all possible collect all relevant information: Names, Home or Business Address, Phone Numbers of everyone involved (drivers, passengers, or witnesses). Also, make sure to collect insurance policy information, driver's license, and everything about the car, including what it looked like, the license plate, and what was damaged.

6. Call your insurance company immediately after all safety procedures have been finished. Also, check with your local DMV in case you need to file a report with them, depending on the amount of damage. You may lose your license regardless of fault if the accident was severe enough.

7. Try to also take pictures of both cars and the location for best results. Write down or photograph all the street names and the layout of the street, such as stop signs or lights, number of lanes, and where the collision occurred.
